Lake Sedlitz

In future, Lake Sedlitz will play a central role in the navigable lake network in the heart of the Lusatian Lakeland and will be connected via three canals. The former Sedlitz open-cast mine has been flooded since 2005. The flooding of Lake Sedlitz is expected to continue until 2025. It will then be the largest artificial lake in the Lusatian Lakeland.

Lake Sedlitz cannot yet be used for water tourism. However, there is a special permit as a landing site for seaplanes and permission for the Modellwasserflughafen e.V. in Lieske to launch/land model seaplanes. The shore zone at Lake Sedlitz is changing. At the Lieske lakeside beach, a newly designed, spacious car park with camper van pitches and a sanitary building invite visitors to stop off at the water's edge. In the Lieske area, the shoreline design has already been completed, and a passenger boat landing stage, a bathing beach and a barrier-free ramp have also been built there. A playground, a resting place for water walkers and a building for snacks are to make the location even more attractive in the coming years. The "Glück Auf" exhibition is already open during the season at the Lieske lakeside beach and offers visitors exciting insights into the history of lignite mining and the development of the Lusatian Lakeland. The north shore is the only major development area for a maritime business park in the Lusatian Lakeland. The transport and media development has already been completed and marketing of the land will begin shortly. South of Sedlitz, development work was carried out in 2022 in Sedlitz Bay. Via the newly constructed road "Zur Sedlitzer Bucht", visitors can take a break at the public car park and enjoy the view of Sedlitz Bay. In addition to the basic water tourism infrastructure with a beach, a rest area for water walkers and a multifunctional building, a special residential location on the waterfront is also to be developed here in the following years.

The Ilse Canal to the neighbouring Lake Großräschen was completed in 2014. It will only be usable on the waterway when both lakes have reached their final water level. However, the footpath and cycle path through the ship tunnel can already be used.

At the mouth of the Sorno Canal, it is worth stopping at the rusty-red "Rostiger Nagel" observation tower. From the top, the view sweeps over Lake Sedlitz and three other large lakes.
