The Überleiter 6 canal connects the lakes Partwitzer See in the west with Neuwieser See in the East, running a length of 467 yards (427 m). The construction appears enormous due to its almost 55 yard (50 m) long lock. This lock is necessary, because Neuwieser See is nearly 10 feet (3 m) higher than Partwitzer See. The maritime construction is traversed by the impressive bridge of Staatsstraße 234 that leads from Hoyerswerda to Partwitz.
Canals (German: Überleiter) serve more purposes than just tourism. They are important for regulating the water level in the individual lakes and promote water exchange between the flooded pits. 13 of these canals are planned for construction in the Lusatian Lake District. The Überleiter 6 canal provides the link between the heart of the chain of lakes and the eastern part of the lake district. Passenger ships will cruise along here in future.
Whereas Partwitzer See is being developed to provide a new holiday destination, parts of Neuwieser See remain under conservation. It belongs to the core area of the large-scale nature protection project ‘Lusatian Lake District’, whose stakeholders have been actively involved in the region already since the turn of the millennium. The objective is the conservation of a post-mining landscape that provides a habitat to as many species as possible. The combination of land and water in particular creates a wide range of possibilities.
A holiday park is under construction in the direct vicinity of Überleiter 6. The canal offers delightful views of Partwitzer See and Neuwieser See.
