In the Realm of the Sea Eagle
The bicycle tour leads through the Oberlausitzer Heide- und Teichlandschaft Biosphere Reserve, where sea eagles circle overhead. Since the 1980s, the population of these impressive birds of prey has recovered in Germany. Today the sea eagle once again has its breeding ground in the heath and pond landscape south of the Lusatian Lake District. On the circular trail you cycle through forests, past meadows, fields and ponds. Sea eagles, but also cranes, herons and other water birds can be observed from the trail or specially-created places by the ponds. Along the way you learn about the way of life and territory of the sea eagle at seven informative stations. These stations are not to be missed, and above each one a silvery shining sea eagle revolves in the wind. It is worth making short detours along the way to viewpoints, observation platforms, natural and cultural monuments, biosphere hosts, farm shops, artisans and local history museums.
Length: 67 kilometres (total route)
The cycle path can also be divided into a west tour (28 kilometres) and an east tour (about 45 kilometres). The “intersection” between these two parts of the tour is the section of the trail between Uhyst and Mönau.
Start/finish: Boxberg/Oberlausitz OT Uhyst/Spree, Gasthof “Drei Linden”
Circular route via: Dürrbach – Klitten – Tauer – Zimpel – Klein Oelsa – Kaschel – Ruhethal – Lieske – Mönau – Rauden – Hermsdorf/Spree – Weißig – Friedersdorf – Litschen – Driewitz – Drehna
Trail conditions: The circular route has a flat to slightly hilly character. The tour runs partly on asphalted cycle paths and little used side roads, and partly on gravel, sand and forest paths, which can be soft and eroded after rainfall. Part of the route also leads along roads, mostly little used village and local roads.
